Sumatra Mandheling Coffee Beans

Product Description

This Mandheling grows under shade and native trees in the volcanic soils of the Simalungun and Karo highlands of North Sumatra.

It is wet-hulled — Giling Basah, where the parchment comes off while the bean is still holding moisture — and that is where the Sumatran character comes from: a heavy, creamy body, earthy and herbal, with a clean smoky finish. The lively orange-citrus brightness on top is less expected, and it keeps the cup from sitting too heavy. It works for filter and for espresso.

The coffee is produced by a cooperative of smallholders who sun-dry the beans on open patios. Buying it supports their farming practices and the coffee-growing expertise they have built over generations.
