Coffee to water ratio for each method
These are the starting points the calculator uses, from our guide to the coffee-to-water ratio. Change the coffee by a gram or two to suit your taste.
| Method | Ratio | For example | Grind | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pour-over | 1:16 | 15 g coffee to 240 ml water | Medium, like coarse sea salt | 2:30 to 3:30 in all |
| French press | 1:15 | 30 g coffee to 450 ml water | Coarse | 4 minutes |
| Coffee maker | 1:16 | 92 g coffee to 1,480 ml water (10 coffee-maker cups) | Medium | Set by the machine |
| Chemex | 1:17 | 30 g coffee to 510 ml water | Medium-coarse, like kosher salt | 4 to 5 minutes in all |
| AeroPress | 1:12 | 15 g coffee to 180 ml water | Medium-fine | 1 to 2 minutes of steeping |
| Cold brew | 1:8 | 100 g coffee to 800 ml water | Coarse | 12 to 24 hours in the fridge |
| Espresso | 1:2 | 18 g in, 36 g out | Fine | 25 to 30 seconds |
Spoons, scoops and cups
The calculator counts a level tablespoon of ground coffee as about 5 g, and a coffee scoop as 2 tablespoons, about 10 g. Spoons are only a rough guide; a kitchen scale is exact.
A cup here is 250 ml, a Canadian metric cup. A coffee maker counts smaller cups of 5 fl oz, so its 12-cup carafe holds about 1.8 litres. Pick "coffee-maker cups" to count the way your machine does.

Our coffees come whole bean or ground. Each coffee's page lists the grinds it comes in, so choose yours there. The calculator above names the coffees we sell in the grind your method needs.
